Gernsbach (Germany): City of sundials

Gernsbach is often referred to as the "City of sundials", since currently 23 of these special clocks can be found in the urban area.

The sundial can be one of the oldest inventions of mankind. Time has occupied all the ancient culture of all things.

The oldest sundial in Gernsbach was built around 1400 in the Catholic Church. The catalog of Gernsbach sundials is composed of different systems and shapes: parallel equator, vertical and horizontally inclined, clocks with and without equation of time, etc. The pavement and the lawn, as well as different materials reflect the variety of sundials.

All sundials, except those in the catholic church and the old town hall indicate the central European (winter) time (CET), in some cases the equation of time must be taken into account. Daylight saving time is calculated by adding one hour.
