The world's largest sundial costs 700,000 euros and is unfinished in Zaragoza
In the Zaragoza neighborhood Vadorrey between the park and the Ebro River East, there is a sundial that breaks all records. The size and accuracy certifies the Guinness Book, the runtime and cost, common sense. Infrastructure began to settle in 2009 and, six years later, is not yet complete. The initial cost was 700,000 euros, 400,000 of them provided by Bantierra and the rest by the city of Zaragoza, but the amount has continued to rise.
The sundial Vadorrey named after its sponsor, Bantierra Zaragoza, and consists of a steel pole that weighs 50 tons and is 46 meters long. It rises to a height of 31 meters on a semicircular plaza where necessary include timestamps for the giant minute hand (can get to cast a shadow of 500 meters in length) to perform its function. Concrete pavement with such brands took two years to be placed, so that during that time the clock to no avail. Now that the mechanism works, the land occupied should still be conditioned to turn in the astronomical park included in the project.
The last intervention, conducted this spring, has been to place a decorative piece dubbed 'Asteroid' by its author, engineer and artist Juan Antonio Ros. Ros is also the designer of the entire assembly. It is an area of two meters in diameter, with five craters of various sizes, which serves as explanatory panel on the use of the clock.
On the field of steel and brass they are engraved the words that shine in the mast base clock. Words such as land development, sun, man, living, sustainable or savings. According to Ros, "the park as a whole has an international dimension and wants the main elements are in harmony with each other and enhance the quality of space. Therefore, the interpretive panel is a thoughtful piece of plastic surgery ".
The recent work, along with the Zoning and placing a giant plate Guinness record title, cost another 28,000 euros to the municipal coffers. And it is that the land on which is projected the solar park covering an area of over 3,300 square meters between the streets Marqués de la Cadena, Balbino Orensanz and Paseo de la Ribera. If the project comes to culminate completely incorporate a space of time with landscaped areas that will mark the solstices and equinoxes.
Two more notes. The sundial Zaragoza listed in Guinness World Records since 2013 and has replaced its huge size to Disney's Giant Sundial, located in Florida, and also to Jaipur, India.
